The provided sketches reveal the EV to look largely unchanged from a regular XC40, although there are some styling revisions that result from the adoption of an electric powertrain.
As electric cars require less airflow for cooling purposes, there’s now a covered front grille, which also gives the electric XC40 a more unique look compared to variants with an internal combustion engine. Beyond aesthetic purposes, the grille also packages the sensors for the car’s Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS).
Moving on to the rear, the absence of any exhaust emissions also sees the removal of tailpipes for the model. The electric XC40 also features a frunk (front load compartment) that provides around 30 litres of space because the electric motor takes up less room than a combustion engine.
Customers will get to choose from eight exterior colours, including a brand new Sage Green metallic option, while a contrasting black roof comes as standard. There are also two new 19- and 20-inch wheel options for further personalisation.
Inside, there’s a new driver interface specific to the electric XC40, which provides relevant information such as the current status of the battery and powertrain. Recycled materials will also be used in the cabin like for the carpets, while sporty styling details are part of the interior design package.
The EV will be built on Volvo’s Compact Modular Architecture (CMA), with the battery pack being integrated into the floor of the car. The carmaker says this prevents any compromise to interior space, and efforts have also been made to reinforce the car’s body structure.
